A Beautiful Barn Conversion in Staffordshire

The journey of this rustic property restoration in Staffordshire began in February 2020. Working together with Alex Witton from Staffordshire Restoration & Conservation, it was rewarding to breathe new life into such a stunning barn conversion. Featuring engineered softwood flush casement windows and doors with glazing bars for a flawless finish, this project has special memories for our entire team.

Historical beauty with an industrial feel

This property was nestled within the picturesque town of Rugeley in Staffordshire; a landlocked county in England’s West Midlands. An area which boasts a rich tapestry of history, industry and natural beauty.

Staffordshire offers a glimpse into the past with its Iron Age hill forts and remnants of Neolithic settlements. Additionally, the industrial legacy lives on in the ceramics industry, particularly in Stoke-on-Trent, the heart of British pottery production.

Beyond its industrial past, Staffordshire unveils scenic landscapes, from the Cannock Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty to the rolling hills and farmland. Whether you’re seeking historical intrigue, cultural immersion or a breath of fresh air, properties in Staffordshire offer something for everyone and we wanted the product selection to reflect this.

An on-trend colour palette with timeless appeal

Our team wanted the fenestration solutions to reflect the surrounding natural world and give a nod to classic design trends, while feeling fresh, bright and contemporary. This was something that the client specified too.

Our procurement team therefore arranged for the windows and doors to be factory finished in a bespoke RAL colour (LG 169 Pear Colour Dark). This calming, muted green has become a popular trend for windows and doors in recent years. Especially for projects which require a touch of classic elegance with a modern twist.

Generally, this shade complements natural elements like stone and brick exteriors, creating a cohesive and inviting look. The colour’s subtle vibrancy also infuses individuality without overwhelming the build. Ideal for those wanting to move away from neutral tones and anthracite grey. Overall, soft greens are a versatile choice for homeowners seeking to elevate kerb appeal and differentiate a property’s façade.

Airy yet authentic, the muted green hue added natural sophistication to the properties exterior. Harmonising with the surrounding greenery, pairing beautifully with the brick and softly enhancing the overall cottage-style aesthetic of the property.

Natural light to enhance a cottage interior

Once the main colour palette was selected, it was time to delve into the details that really made this property shine.

The first recommendation was to keep the window frames white on the interior. This offers several advantages. Firstly, they promote a sense of light and openness within a room. The bright white colour reflects natural light that enters through the window, making the space feel airy and expansive. This is especially helpful in smaller rooms or those with limited light flow.

Secondly, white frames create a neutral backdrop that allows other design elements in the room to take centre stage. Bold furniture, colourful artwork, or patterned wallpaper can all shine against the clean white canvas. Finally, white frames offer timeless elegance that complements a wide range of interior design styles, from modern minimalism to traditional country charm. Their versatility makes them a safe choice that won’t clash with existing décor or go out of style.

Mirrored glass doors for a warm welcome

Next, we suggested the installation of external doors with mirrored glass to create a visually elevated entrance. This would also be brighter alternative to the existing dark brown wooden doors currently in place. There are additional benefits to this approach too:

Enhanced Kerb Appeal
The reflective surface creates impact, adding a modern and sophisticated vibe to any property exterior. It can make a small entryway appear larger and grander as well.

Privacy with a View
Mirrored glass offers a one-way mirror effect during the day. You can see out while maintaining privacy for those outside looking in. This allows occupants to keep an eye on their surroundings without sacrificing natural light.

Increased Brightness
The reflective nature of the glass bounces sunlight back into the entryway, creating a brighter and more welcoming atmosphere. This is particularly advantageous in areas with limited natural light.

Reduced Energy Costs
In warmer weather, the mirrored glass can reflect sunlight away from the property, potentially reducing cooling costs.

A rustic yet refined restoration

We’re delighted with the results of this sensitively crafted yet spectacular renovation. Boasting unique details such as mirrored glass doors and a bespoke soft green windows, it truly highlights the impact that made to measure doors and windows can have on a property.
