Aluminium heritage-style casement windows are designed as modern replacements for traditional steel-framed windows, offering classic aesthetics with contemporary performance. Fenea offer options from the two leading systems in this category: Smart Systems’ Alitherm Heritage and Sheerline’s Classic window range.
Both systems feature ultra-slim profiles that emulate steel windows – ideal for sensitive renovations, listed buildings, and conservation area projects – while providing advanced thermal insulation, weather resistance, and security. They enable architects and developers to meet strict planning requirements for appearance, without compromising on energy efficiency or user comfort.
One of the primary drivers for choosing specialised aluminium heritage window systems is their suitability for heritage and conservation projects. Both Alitherm Heritage and Sheerline Classic have been explicitly developed to replicate the look of traditional steel windows (often seen in Victorian, Edwardian, Art Deco, and mid-century buildings) while overcoming the shortcomings of those old windows.

Aluminium heritage casement window systems like Alitherm Heritage and Sheerline Classic enable the marriage of timeless design and 21st-century performance. They allow architects and developers to faithfully restore or recreate the appearance of steel windows – slim sightlines, classic glazing patterns, and all – while meeting today’s standards for energy efficiency, weathertightness, and security.
These systems are modern thermal aluminium solutions specifically developed for heritage and refurbishment applications where a like-for-like steel window replacement is needed. They can be supplied in a wide variety of configurations, including fixed panes, side-hung and top-hung outward-opening casements, tilt-and-turn and pivot windows, and even vertical sliding “sash” window options.
Multiple units can be coupled together (horizontally or vertically) using dedicated slim coupling mullions, enabling the creation of large multi-part window assemblies while maintaining narrow sightlines. Our systems offer both externally and internally beaded glazing options (including a choice of square or chamfered glazing beads to replicate either a flat modern look or a putty-line profile), giving flexibility in achieving the desired heritage aesthetic. For refurbishment convenience, an “odd-leg” outer frame option is available (e.g. a 70 mm frame with an integrated flange) to assist with replacing old steel windows in existing openings, or we can supply slim outer frames for coupling to existing sub-frames.
Fenea can also offer a choice of “Stepped” vs “Contemporary” sash designs, each available in flush or standard variants. The stepped sash mimics the putty-glazed step of traditional steel windows, giving an authentic vintage appearance, while the contemporary sash is flat for a cleaner modern look. Both can be used in different combinations (e.g. a stepped flush sash for true steel replica aesthetics, or a contemporary sash with a bevelled putty bead) to suit project needs.
Our aluminium heritage windows can achieve U-values as low as 1.1W/m2K with 36mm triple glazing, giving them an A+ WER (Window Energy Rating). They meet Approved Document L 2021 standards.
Our systems have been rigorously tested to BS 6375 Part 1 standards for weather-tightness. Rated Class 4 for air permeability and Class 9A for water tightness, these aluminium heritage windows can handle heavy wind-driven rain. Marine-grade finishes are available where required for additional protection from the elements.
Fenea windows meet PAS 24:2016 and Secured by Design standards, allowing them to meet Approved Document Q standards for new builds. Our systems have BS 4873 certification for robust construction.
